Virtusales were delighted to support the inaugural Biblio University User Group this month, hosted by Harvard University Press in Beverly, Massachusetts.

With an increasing number of university presses choosing to implement BiblioLIVE, Virtusales’ customers can benefit from sharing ideas, innovations and best practice to maximize the utility of the BiblioLIVE suite. The Biblio University group is an engaging online community created to facilitate these conversations and was founded by Dan Wackrow from Harvard University Press and Dennis Langlois from Princeton University Press.

This month the Biblio University Group launched its first two day event, with guest speakers from Harvard University Press, Columbia University Press, Princeton University Press, Ingram Content Group and Publishing Technology Partners, and demonstrations presented by Virtusales.

A Case Study on Rights Management

The first day began with a focus on managing rights in Biblio. Karen Peláez from Harvard gave a fascinating case study on the press’s transition from offline and physical rights cards to a fully digitized system in Biblio. Rodney Elder, Executive Vice President North America at Virtusales then presented best practice tips and advice on managing third party rights in Biblio.

Insights and Tips to Streamline Workflows and Schedules

A topic that was of particular interest to the group throughout the event was that of workflows, whether in scheduling, streamlining acquisitions, or using Biblio’s fully integrated digital asset workflows to create and distribute eBooks with metadata.

Lowell Frye from Columbia University Press showed the group how their extensive use of Biblio’s Groups module facilitated the efficient creation of book lists for conferences, meetings, and catalogs.

There was also a lot of interest from the audience about Columbia’s use of schedules, and how they have established relationships between dependent tasks to automate the process of completing scheduled dates.

Lyndsey Claro from Princeton University Press shared more streamlining innovation, with a case study about using custom fields and dashboards to improve their editorial processes. Custom fields are one of the latest new features to be introduced to Biblio, so this was an opportunity to see one of the first use cases in digitizing memos, forms and minutes alongside the dashboard to better support proposals, copy circulations and acquisitions.

Guest Speakers Peter McCarthy and Bill Trippe Share Views from the Industry

The Biblio University Group were delighted to welcome guest speakers Peter McCarthy from Ingram Content Group and Bill Trippe from Publishing Technology Partners to speak on the second day of the event. Peter shared his insights on connecting solutions and how reader behaviour can be incorporated into publishing systems to drive business intelligence, reader engagement, efficiency and sales. 

Bill Trippe closed the session with an insightful talk, looking at five ways publishers can look to embrace and promote change, that provided plenty of ideas for consideration.

What’s Next for Biblio University?

After an incredibly successful first year, the Biblio University committee have plans to make the meeting an annual event. Founders Dan Wackrow and Dennis Langlois are keen to hear from any university presses looking to join the committee, or host Biblio University 2019.
